My reading of the evidence is that smokers who switch to vaping remove almost all the risks smoking poses to their health. Smokers differ in their needs and I would advise them not to give up on e-cigarettes if they do not like the first one they try. It may take some experimentation with different products and e-liquids to find the right one. An expert independent evidence review published today by Public Health England (PHE) concludes that e-cigarettes are significantly less harmful to health than tobacco and have the potential to help smokers quit smoking.

Amid the increasing popularity of e-cigarettes and vapes among young people, health experts from PGIMER have raised concerns. They pointed out that many young people mistakenly think that e-cigarettes are "cool" because of their flavours, sleek designs, and social appeal. Experts warn that this misconception greatly increases the chances of non-smoking youth using regular cigarettes.
Among adolescents who both vaped and smoked traditional cigarettes, a higher proportion in the This is Quitting program, about 51%, reported not vaping nor smoking at seven months, compared with 30% of the assessment-only group. Withdrawal from tobacco products can cause temporary congestion and respiratory discomfort as your lungs and airways begin to heal. Increased mucus production right after quitting smoking may be a positive sign that your respiratory system is recovering. What might be considered safe for the average workplace employee could still pose serious health risks for more medically vulnerable populations.
Bianco recalled an instance where her son was even subject to content in which a fishing YouTuber he watched was sponsored by a spitless tobacco brand. He notes that the most effective methods involve some sort of pharmaceutical, either nicotine replacement patches or pills, combined with a program that helps you deal with the problems of quitting smoking. (The American Lung Association recommends Freedom From Smoking.) Even then the average quit rate is just 25 percent, so even the best methods only have a one in four chance of succeeding. The new study included more than 1,500 adolescents in the United States, ages 13 to 17, who reported vaping in the previous 30 days, with many of them — about 76% — reporting that they vape within 30 minutes of waking up, a signal of nicotine dependence. Moreover, people who both vaped and smoked were four times more likely to go on to develop lung cancer compared to people who had only smoked, Bittoni's group found.

The mid-to-long-term consequences of e-cigarettes are not yet known, as it's a new product and has been sold for less than a decade in the U.S. While much remains to be determined about these lasting health consequences of these products, we are very troubled by what we see so far. The inhalation of harmful chemicals can cause irreversible lung damage and lung diseases.
When the human body breaks down a foreign substance, one can typically find chemical by-products in hair or urine that provide clues about how it has interacted with cells. This is true for nicotine, but in the case of propylene glycol, no one has established what the relevant by-product is or how to best detect it. Boston, MA – Diacetyl, a flavoring chemical linked to cases of severe respiratory disease, was found in more than 75% of flavored electronic cigarettes and refill liquids tested by researchers at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Two other potentially harmful related compounds were also found in many of the tested flavors, which included varieties with potential appeal to young people such as Cotton Candy, Fruit Squirts, and Cupcake. In conclusion, the prevalence of susceptibility among adolescents differs by product type. Liking school and academically oriented educational aspirations appear as consistent protective factors, while the use of other tobacco or nicotine products and positive attitudes towards product use in one’s age group appear as risk factors.
More people began vaping in 2023 than initiated alcohol or illicit substances. A 2015 study suggests that people who vape nicotine are more likely to become dependent on nicotine than people who vape nicotine-free fluids. Vaping might appear to be a less harmful choice for people trying to quit smoking. However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t risks involved, even if the vape liquid is nicotine-free. For instance, a 2018 study reported that exposure to e-cigarette aerosol makes teeth surfaces more prone to developing bacteria.

Various studies suggest the vapors from e-cigarettes contain several cancer-causing substances, as well as incredibly tiny particles of tin, chromium, nickel and other heavy metals, which, in large enough concentrations, can damage the lungs. These particles likely fleck off the solder joints or metal coil in the devices when heated. Because they are so small, the tiniest bits of metal, known as nanoparticles, can travel deep into the lungs. There they could exacerbate asthma, bronchitis—an inflammation of the tubes that carry air to and from the lungs—and emphysema—a disease in which the lungs' many air sacs are destroyed, leaving patients short of breath. So far there are not enough data to say with certainty whether e-cigs worsen these disorders. E-cigarettes have a battery-operated component that heats liquid containing nicotine, flavorings, and other chemicals.
He also highlighted the ban on e-cigarettes in India under the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act, 2019, aimed at preventing health risks and curbing their use among youth. They can also be collectively called electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS).
However, the long-term effects of all flavour chemicals used by this industry (which are more than 15,000) remain unknown and they are not usually included in the product label [78]. Furthermore, there is no safety guarantee since they may harbour potential toxic or irritating properties [5]. In addition to its toxicological effects on foetus development, nicotine can disrupt brain development in adolescents and young adults [44,45,46]. Several studies have also suggested that nicotine is potentially carcinogenic (reviewed in [41]), but more work is needed to prove its carcinogenicity independently of the combustion products of tobacco [47].
According to the CDC, 1 in 4 deaths in the U.S. result from cardiovascular disease caused by cigarette smoking. According to a 2018 study examining infrequent cannabis smoking in adults, vaping THC produced stronger mind-altering effects than smoking a similar amount of weed. However, nicotine alone is relatively harmless, and switching from daily tobacco smoking to daily e-cigarette use can be an important step for people to stop smoking completely. However, researchers found that only daily e-cigarette use had a statistically significant effect on smoking cessation rates. Despite that, e-cigarettes are more popular among U.S. teens than any other form of tobacco. Electronic cigarettes are battery powered devices that people use to heat liquid into a vapor that can be inhaled. Using e-cigarettes may play a part in some kids or teens wanting to use other, more harmful tobacco products. Although the term "vapor" may sound harmless, the aerosol that comes out of an e-cigarette is not water vapor and can be harmful. The 2021 report also provides details on some characteristics of e-cigarette products, including flavors and nicotine concentration, as well as the bundling of the components in cartridge systems.
The SKE Crystal Bar has an auto-shutoff that powers it down after 15 minutes, preventing it from overheating while idle. It also shuts down in response to a short circuit so that wiring or battery issues won't cause it to ignite. And its reverse polarity protection keeps the device from being damaged if the battery is improperly installed (though this shouldn't be an issue since it's a pre-assembled vape). We appreciate the elegant design of the SKE Crystal Bar, and it's got a reputation for delivering rich, long-lasting flavor.

The FDA has not authorized any flavored e-cigarette products and reports that it has denied marketing applications for millions of flavored products. E-cigarette companies have filed over 60 lawsuits challenging the FDA’s marketing denial orders. In addition, while the FDA denied marketing applications for all Juul products in June 2022, it subsequently put that decision on hold in the face of a lawsuit by Juul. Some of the harmful substances emitted in secondhand e-cigarette aerosols are similar to those in secondhand tobacco smoke.
If a child ingests or touches fluids with an allergen in it, they could have a reaction. This, however, is only a theoretical risk for now, as little research has been done on the topic. One study, for example, found that under most conditions, someone vaping at home all day didn’t change the air quality a terrible amount unless they vaped intensely at a high voltage.
Vaping can cause eye, throat, and nose irritation, as well as irritation in the respiratory tract. The nicotine in e-cigarettes can cause dizziness and nausea, especially in new users. In contrast, people living in the most advantaged socioeconomic areas were the most likely to use e‑cigarettes but not smoke regular cigarettes (6.6%) (Figure 4). Young people aged 18 to 24 were the most likely to have used e‑cigarettes in 2022–2023, with almost 1 in 2 (49%) having used them at least once in their lifetime, and over 1 in 5 (21%) currently using e‑cigarettes in 2022–2023. Among young adults, men were slightly more likely to use e-cigarettes than women, while those who are white were more likely to use e-cigarettes than young Black adults and significantly more likely than young Asian or Hispanic/Latino adults. Some are small and look like USB drives or pens, while others are much larger.
Despite being marketed as a safer alternative to traditional cigarettes, e-cigarettes contain numerous harmful substances such as formaldehyde, heavy metals, and carcinogens, he added. Part of the difficulty in curbing youth e-cigarette use has been the intensity of the industry’s marketing towards kids, particularly through social media influencers, said Bianco. In the 2021 Youth National Tobacco Survey, 73.5% of youth that use social media reported seeing e-cigarette–related content.
It can damage your heart, arteries, and lungs, increasing the risk for heart attack, stroke, and chronic lung disease. E-cigarettes recently surpassed conventional cigarettes as the most commonly used tobacco product among youth.1 It is critical that public health officials and the general public understand the potential risks of using them. The FDA recently approved its first menthol-flavored electronic cigarettes for adult smokers. In contrast to the clear evidence that flavored products fueled the youth e-cigarette epidemic, every major U.S. public health authority – including the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, the CDC and even the FDA itself – has found there is inadequate evidence to conclude that e-cigarettes are effective at helping smokers quit. E-cigarettes are battery-operated devices used for a type of smoking called vaping.
This mixture is typically made up of propylene glycol and/or glycerol (vegetable glycerin) and other chemicals. Flavouring ingredients include chemicals and blends of chemicals used to make different flavours. This has been observed with family-level SEP indicators, including parental education [3, 4] and family affluence [5]as well as individual-level indicators of adulthood SEP such as academic performance [4, 5] and vocational education [6–8]. For smokeless tobacco (snus) use and electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use, the associations with SEP have been mixed [7, 9, 10]. The scientists investigated the effect of the e-liquids on cells called endothelial cells that line the interior of blood vessels.
The FDA has the legal authority to regulate tobacco products containing nicotine from any source, including synthetic nicotine. Their actions should come as no surprise as e-cigarette manufacturers fail to provide consumers with guidance or take responsibility for appropriate disposal methods. In a separate study conducted by Truth Initiative in 2019, almost half (46.9%) of e-cigarette device owners said that the e-cigarette device they used currently did not provide any disposal information, such as where to send used batteries or empty pods. Additionally, when e-cigarette device owners were asked about e-cigarette waste disposal, the majority (73.7%) believed that it was difficult to find e-cigarette drop off sites. Principal investigator Wendy Max, PhD, director of the Institute for Health & Aging, noted that from 2013 to 2018, e-cigarette use among high school students soared from 4.5% to 20.8%. The Australian Government’s new Public Health (Tobacco and Other Products) legislation commences from April 2024 and incorporates new controls governing the advertising and promotion of e‑cigarettes (Department of Health and Aged Care 2024). According to the National Tobacco Strategy 2023–2030 (Department of Health and Aged Care 2023b), strengthening regulations on e‑cigarettes has been listed as a priority area, and actions such as prohibiting the sale of flavoured e‑cigarettes have been proposed.
E-cigarettes aren't thought of as 100% safe, but most experts think they're less dangerous than cigarettes, says Neal Benowitz, MD, a nicotine researcher at the University of California at San Francisco. Cigarette smoking kills almost half a million people a year in the United States. Most of the harm comes from the thousands of chemicals that are burned and inhaled in the smoke, he explains. E-cigarettes are battery-operated devices that can look like a real cigarette or pen.
In addition to these laws, e-cigarettes are prohibited from being used in child care facilities, and people purchasing tobacco products have to pay a 15 percent tax. While not all the effects of smoking are immediate, the complications and damage can last for years. The good news is that quitting smoking can reduce many risk factors for the conditions and diseases below. For a long time, e-cigarettes and other electronic aerosolizers weren’t regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). They only came under the purview of the FDA in 2016, after they had been on the market for nearly a decade.
But e-cigarettes haven't proved to be safer or more effective than nicotine-replacement medications in helping people stop smoking. He was a founding member of the Society for Nicotine and Tobacco Research. As a public health researcher, he has studied numerous issues related to nicotine use and policy, with some recent work focused on cigarette and e-cigarette use among adolescents and young adults. Lynn T. Kozlowski is an internationally recognized expert on tobacco use, e-cigarettes and nicotine policy. He can speak to the media about these issues, including trends in both smoking and vaping (including Juuling). Fears that e-cigarettes have made smoking seem normal again or even led to people taking up tobacco smoking are not so far being realised based on the evidence assessed by this important independent review.
Read this paper by NCI’s Dr. Ned Sharpless and CRUK’s Dr. Iain Foulkes. Drug forums and e-liquid vendors were monitored by the researchers for e-liquids that "purportedly contained alternative pharmaceuticals." A clue in searching for e-liquids that contain illicit drugs is cost, the scientists said. Most nicotine e-liquids range from $5 to $10, while alternative drug e-liquids go for five to twenty times as much. In comparison to the general population, support for these measures varied greatly among people who currently used e‑cigarettes. The most supported measure was prohibiting the sale of e‑cigarettes to people under 18 years of age (67%), while the least supported measure was banning all additives in e‑cigarettes, to make them less attractive to young people (33%) (Figure 7).
Nicotine levels ranged 0.10–0.32 mg puff−1 across the 3 study products. From the 19 proposed HPHCs specifically of concern in e-cigarettes, only 3 (glycerol, isoamyl acetate and propylene glycol) were quantified. As crucial as it is to health to quit smoking conventional cigarettes, it is unwise, as a rule, to take up vaping as a substitute, Christiani emphasizes.
Since ditching e-cigarettes for cigarettes, I’m back to smoking on weekends only. I couldn’t do cardio to save my life; walking up stairs sucked the wind out of me. My stamina and day-to-day life was vastly more affected by this vaping habit than when I used to just smoke a few cigarettes on Saturday nights. Firstly that propylene glycol, largely responsible for making your breath look like a cloud of mist, is also found in fog machines used in concerts and has been linked to chronic lung problems among stagehands. It’s actually FDA-approved for use in food (believe it or not it’s common in pre-made cake mix) but when heated to vaping temperature it can produce the carcinogen formaldehyde. "Furthermore, the US Food and Drug Administration has not approved NRTs for anyone younger than 18 years (although many health care professionals prescribe NRTs for adolescents, as is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics).
Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are devices made to resemble cigarettes. Despite making great strides to reduce smoking, tobacco is still our biggest killer. Our region has always kept an open mind towards using electronic cigarette in bangladesh cigarettes as we can see the massive potential health benefits from switching.
However, no rigorous scientific studies have shown that they are safe for use. Some people who smoke choose to try e-cigarettes to help them stop smoking. But switching to e-cigarettes still exposes users to potentially serious ongoing health risks. It’s important to stop using all tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, as soon as possible both to reduce health risks and to avoid staying addicted to nicotine.
This ban excludes disposable e-cigarette devices, which are sold in many appealing flavors and are relatively inexpensive. And are now the most popular type of e-cigarette used by adolescents. Nicotine is highly addictive and may lead to nicotine cravings and development of tolerance (the need to use more often in order to have the same effect). Nicotine addiction can negatively affect relationships and impair performance at school, at work, or in other activities. Researchers have also identified vitamin E acetate, a chemical added to some THC-containing vaping products, as the main—but possibly not the only—cause of the illness.
Of the participants who were not using e-cigarettes, only 5.8% had quit smoking altogether by the end of the survey, while 9.9% had stopped smoking daily. At the end of the survey, 28% of smokers using e-cigarettes daily had ceased smoking tobacco altogether, while 45.5% had ceased smoking tobacco daily. The AHA notes that while vaping liquids contain fewer contaminants than cigarettes, they are not entirely safe. Based on the available evidence, smoking appears more harmful than vaping, but this does not mean that vaping is safe.
JUULs very closely resemble a USB drive, can be charged in a USB port, and emit little to no detectable vapor or odor. Due to their easily concealable design, they are of particular concern with regard to youth use. DOH urges all people to be very careful when it comes to your health. Even if a substance has not yet been proven to be dangerous, there is no guarantee it is safe. You don’t actually light up an e-cig; they’re powered by a rechargeable lithium battery. Instead of burning tobacco, the "e-liquid" is vaporized in a heating chamber when the user inhales.
"It’s young people doing something terrible for them that’s supposed to be healthy," he said. There’s a whole genre of throwing-away-my-Juul videos on social media, with people tossing their vape into a river or a snowbank as dramatic music plays. New research led by Roswell Park experts in health behavior and published today in the journal JAMA Network Open suggests that daily e-cigarette use may help some people to quit using combustible cigarettes.
While e-cigarette use prevalence has declined significantly since the heyday of JUUL — 10% of high school students reported using e-cigarettes in 2023 — e-cigarette use among young people remains a concern. Thousands of flavored, high-nicotine, and relatively cheap e-cigarette products remain on the market — many of them illegally — driving youth use and nicotine addiction. Equally concerning, nearly half of young people who have ever tried e-cigarettes continue to use them, and many do so daily. As encouraging as the data was a few years ago, it’s starting to look like that’s not the case. The FDA is yet to approve them as a smoking cessation aid and a recent CDC study found that most adult e-cigarette users — 58.8 percent of them — don't stop smoking cigarettes and instead wind up using both products. The few scientists actively trying to fill the gap in the research literature are running into obstacles.
So I must ask that you not make them about you and respectfully let me and my vape alone. I can be conscious not to blow my vapor in your direction, if you will be conscious not to send your judgment and complaints in mine. Dr Sonu Goel, a distinguished public health expert and chairperson of the Tobacco Control Section explained that e-cigarettes, also known as Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS), vaporise a nicotine solution instead of burning tobacco leaves.
In many high and middle income countries lower socioeconomic status is a strong predictor of smoking. In North America, the common name for the remains of a cigarette after smoking is a cigarette butt. In Britain, it is also called a fag-end or a dog-end.[44] The butt is typically about 30% of the cigarette's original length. It consists of a tissue tube which holds a filter and some remains of tobacco mixed with ash. According to data from the World Health Organization,[39] the amount of tobacco per 1000 cigarettes fell from 1.03 kg (2.28 pounds) in 1960 to 0.41 kg (0.91 pounds) in 1999, largely as a result of reconstituting tobacco, fluffing, and additives. The epidemic use of e-cigarettes is a complicated problem which requires a cooperative effort between partners, organizations, and communities.

Electronic cigarettes—or e-cigarettes—are battery-powered devices that convert a liquid, usually with nicotine, into an inhalable aerosol. They are designed as an alternative to smoking traditional cigarettes. First introduced in the United States about 15 years ago, e-cigarettes have evolved from disposable, single-use products to more sophisticated devices that can be refilled and customized (fig. 1). PHILADELPHIA – Smoking e-cigarettes, also called vaping, has been marketed as a safe alternative to tobacco cigarettes and is rising in popularity among non-smoking adolescents.
