To inform schools of intervention needs, the susceptibility measure could be utilized in school surveys and relevant student services as a screening tool. Simultaneously, it would support the evaluation of existing policies and programmes and monitoring of potential counter-effects. For example, an earlier study observed that school-based programmes and policies had resulted in higher susceptibility risk at some intervention schools [37]. Effective and non-counter-productive interventions are especially important for products where susceptibility is at a high level, like e-cigarettes. Interventions to reduce susceptibility therefore need to address product regulation and marketing as well as social influence, norms, and perceptions.
It can’t hurt to talk with a doctor or other healthcare professional about the risks of vaping, especially if you already have a chronic health condition, such as asthma. More research needs to be done in order to understand the side effects of nicotine-free vaping. Some of these cellular changes have been linked to the development of cancer over the long term, though there’s currently no evidence to suggest that vaping causes cancer. The 2018 NAP report found substantial evidence that vaping causes cell dysfunction, oxidative stress, and damage to DNA.
So, if you are vaping to quit smoking, you should aim to eventually stop vaping too. In 2022, UK experts reviewed the international evidence and found that "in the short and medium term, vaping poses a small fraction of the risks of smoking". Vapes are electronic devices that let you inhale nicotine in an aerosol, or vapour, instead of smoke. This is done by heating a solution (e-liquid) that typically contains propylene glycol, vegetable glycerine, flavourings and nicotine. Vapes come in many shapes and sizes but they have the same basic components, including a battery, sensor, and atomizer/ flavor cartridge.
Parents and anti-tobacco groups immediately criticized the decision, which follows years of advocacy efforts to keep menthol and other flavors that can appeal to teens off the market. The FDA said it authorized four menthol e-cigarettes from Njoy, the vaping brand recently acquired by tobacco giant Altria, which also sells Marlboro cigarettes. This is in contrast to passive smoking (secondhand smoke), which is known to be very harmful to health.
Cumberland County piloted CATCH My Breath in 2022, and had teachers in the restorative justice classrooms of Howard Learning Academy Middle School and Pine Forest High School run the program. The pilot was enough of a success that the county is now training one person in every middle and high school in the district to implement the program on a needs-basis in restorative justice classrooms this school year. There were also participants in a "waitlist" group, who received neither text messages through the This is Quitting program nor the assessment-only follow-up messages. At last I can feel like I am a part of society again, and not some evildoer who deserves to be sent out to the village gates to hide my atrocious acts. Siegel is concerned that the use of nicotine salts could make the Juul more addictive. "With Juul, the pattern of use isn’t kids having a cherry vape every now and then," he said. "It’s kids sneaking off to the bathroom, kids vaping consistently throughout the day." Siegel said that he was keeping an eye on this behavior.
It would seem that future studies should analyse the possible toxic effects of humectants and related products at concentrations similar to those that e-cigarette vapers are exposed to reach conclusive results. Vape aerosols are not just harmless water vapors that are inhaled and exhaled (as marketed). Vape aerosol exposure is unsafe and contains chemicals, metals (i.e., lead, nickel), and other particles that can interfere with lung development and health.
Aug. 9, 2023, News Staff — New CDC data suggest that e-cigarette use is becoming more popular among young adults, even as their use of tobacco decreases. Freebase nicotine is nicotine that has been dissolved in a liquid mixture, typically propylene glycol and/or vegetable glycerin, and other chemicals such as flavouring ingredients. E-cigarettes contain nicotine and lithium batteries, making them hazardous waste.
In response to this issue, the PACT Act Amendment prohibits sellers from using the U.S. Post Office to ship e-cigarettes, vapes, flavored and smokeless tobacco products. The PACT Act applies to all shipments in interstate commerce (15 U.S.C. § 376) as well as to all delivery sales. Some people who smoke choose to use both cigarettes and e-cigarettes at the same time on an ongoing basis, whether they are trying to quit or not.
The campaign works to counteract the "cost-free" mentality held by many adolescents regarding e-cigarette use, showing them how e-cigarettes, just like cigarettes, puts them at risk for addiction and other health consequences. Besides nicotine, e-cigarette aerosol can contain harmful and cancer-causing chemicals. Defective batteries have caused fires and explosions resulting in serious injuries. Nicotine salts refer to nicotine that has been dissolved in a liquid mixture that is chemically adjusted to be weakly acidic.
"From a public health perspective, we have always been concerned about dual-use of both traditional and e-cig products," said study lead author Marisa Bittoni, an oncology researcher at Ohio State University in Columbus. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the European Union are grappling with these issues as they decide how to regulate the products. Unfettered access could leave people vulnerable to unknown health hazards, but there is also the chance that greater restrictions might hurt folks who are trying to forgo conventional—and more dangerous—tobacco products.
E-cigarettes produce an aerosolized liquid (vapor) that usually contains nicotine and other chemicals inhaled by the user. Months after the release of that advisory, Yale researchers found that byproducts, called acetals, form when flavoring agents mix with solvents in the liquid. It is not yet known if this has negative effects on the body, but Sven-Eric Jordt, PhD, one of the study’s authors, says he hopes that the FDA will begin to study the short- and long-term effects of inhaled acetals. Under the PACT Act, delivery sales of electronic nicotine delivery systems must also comply with state, local or tribal laws involving excise taxes on these devices.
While there appears to be some consensus that vaping may be less harmful to health than tobacco cigarette smoking, the dangers of e-cigarettes remain unclear. The range of e-liquid flavours available to consumers is extensive and is used to attract both current smokers and new e-cigarette users, which is a growing public health concern [6]. In fact, over 5 million middle- and high-school students were current users of e-cigarettes in 2019 [75], and appealing flavours have been identified as the primary reason for e-cigarette consumption in 81% of young users [76]. Since 2016, the FDA regulates the flavours used in the e-cigarette market and has recently published an enforcement policy on unauthorised flavours, including fruit and mint flavours, which are more appealing to young users [77].

Delaware Kick Butts Generation A youth-led program in schools and communities to counter tobacco marketing. E-cigarette flavorings damage human blood vessel cells grown in the lab even in the absence of nicotine, Stanford researchers and their colleagues found. Children are much more prone to nicotine overdose because of their smaller body size. Nicotine poisoning in children comes mostly from eating cigarettes and consuming liquid nicotine — either from absorbing spilled nicotine through their skin or through the mucous membrane in their mouth or from swallowing liquid nicotine.
E-cigarettes, also known as e-cigs, vapes, vape pens, and electronic cigarette liquid cost nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), are experiencing rapid growth in popularity, especially among teens and young adults. They come in a variety of forms, sometimes looking like USB flash drives, pens, and other items that make them hard for parents and teachers to spot. Other electronic devices that heat tobacco instead of liquid nicotine, such as IQOS, are not considered e-cigarettes. Teens cannot participate in such studies, but "we all agree that e-cigs are not a good thing for youth and nonsmokers," Dr. Baldassarri says. The Food and Drug Administration on Friday authorized the first menthol-flavored electronic cigarettes for adult smokers, acknowledging that vaping flavors can reduce the harms of traditional tobacco smoking.
Perhaps contrary to what many would expect, vaping marijuana may have as many negative health effects as nicotine-based vaping. This may have more to do with how vape liquids are processed than the THC itself. The tobacco industry profits from destroying health and is using these newer products to get a seat at the policy-making table with governments to lobby against health policies. The tobacco industry funds and promotes false evidence to argue that these products reduce harm, while at the same time heavily promoting these products to children and non-smokers and continuing to sell billions of cigarettes.
If you suspect you have experienced a health-related side effect from using your e-cigarette or would like to report a product defect, report these via the Yellow Card Scheme. Getting expert help from your local Stop Smoking Service gives you the best chance of quitting smoking for good. To get the best out of it, make sure you're using it as much as you need to and with the right strength of nicotine in your e-liquid.
This guide supports health care providers, systems, and communities seeking to prevent vaping. These resources and others are on the AAFP’s Tobacco and Nicotine Prevention and Control webpage. Familydoctor.org, the Academy’s patient-facing web resource, has additional materials on tobacco addiction, the harms of vaping and several related topics. Young adults with family incomes of less than 200% of the federal poverty level also were more likely to use e-cigarettes than those with greater family income.
Probably the worst thing a parent could do for their child would be to buy an e-cigarette under the misconception that this might prevent them from smoking regular cigarettes, Krishnan-Sarin says. She encourages parents to talk openly and freely about vaping—with the caveat that they provide accurate information. "I think the problem is that parents lose credibility if they say something to try and convince their child, who then finds out that it isn’t true," she says. Vape pen and e-cigarette explosions from overheated, defective and/or modified device batteries have occurred, causing injury and serious health problems to users. FDA regulates the manufacture, import, packaging, labeling, advertising, promotion, sale, and distribution of ENDS, including components and parts of ENDS but excluding accessories. An outbreak of EVALI in late 2019 and early 2020 put thousands of people in the hospital. Since then, EVALI cases have been declining, but people who vape can still get EVALI. Research from the CDC shows that vaping among youth has declined somewhat since 2020.
Founded in 1913 as the Harvard-MIT School of Health Officers, the School is recognized as America’s oldest professional training program in public health. This study explored the prevalence of S-SM, S-EC, and S-SN among adolescents in a country with advanced tobacco control regulations. We found that the susceptibility was highest for e-cigarette use, followed by smoking and snus use. S-SM was more common among girls, whereas S-EC and S-SN were more common among boys. In our analysis, levels of carbonyls were considerably reduced relative both to other studies of e-cigarettes and to Ky1R6F cigarette smoke.
E-cigarettes have been allowed to stay on the market for years without undergoing a full review of their public health impact, sparking a sustained and ongoing crisis of youth use. As of November 2023, the FDA has not completed reviewing all applications from e-cigarette makers to market their products, leaving many e-cigarettes on the market while waiting for a decision. To date, the FDA has denied permission to market flavored and menthol e-cigarette products such as Vuse Solo, Vuse Vibe, Vuse Ciro, and Vuse Alto. The FDA has denied permission to market many non-tobacco and non-menthol flavored e-cigarette products, however, many of those denials are currently under judicial or supervisory review. In recent years, the FDA has increased enforcement efforts around e-cigarette manufacturers and retailers for continuing to sell youth-appealing e-cigarettes. These actions include issuing warning letters, fines, injunctions, and joint operations with other federal officials to seize imports of unauthorized e-cigarette products.
E-cigarette companies also take advantage of other marketing outlets, including the internet, retail environments, and recreational venues and events. This resource presents an overview of key aspects of e-cigarettes, including health effects, marketing practices, and regulations based on research and evidence available at the time of publication. Since the sixties, cigarette companies, starting with Philip Morris, have freebased nicotine using ammonia, which liberates the nicotine so that it can be speedily absorbed into the lungs and the brain.
This was a large increase from 2019, when only 11.3% of people had ever used e‑cigarettes, and 2.5% were currently using them (Figure 1). The proportion of people who used e‑cigarettes daily in 2022–2023 was 3.5%, rising from 1.1% in 2019. In smokers who smoke tobacco cigarettes, blood flow increased modestly after cigarette inhalation and then decreased with subsequent stress. However, with those who vaped, blood flow decreased after inhalation at rest and also after handgrip stress. Finally, lung health effects are not expected to be seen for 20 to 30 years.
Because there is no safe tobacco product, quitting use of all tobacco products is the best way to protect your health. Most e-cigarettes contain nicotine, which is highly addictive and can harm adolescent brain development, which continues into the early to mid-20s. E-cigarettes can contain other harmful substances, including cancer-causing chemicals; chemicals linked to serious lung disease; and heavy metals, such as nickel, tin, and lead. Young people who use e-cigarettes may be more likely to smoke traditional cigarettes in the future. Vapor products produce aerosol by heating a liquid solution, which is inhaled as an aerosol. The process is referred to as "vaping." Vapor products often contain nicotine.
We also have leading brands of e-liquid from some of the biggest manufacturers in the UK. So, if you feel like trying more than one, make sure you check out our multi-buy deals. Unlike cigarette butts, e-cigarette waste won’t biodegrade even under severe conditions. E-cigarettes left on the street eventually break down into microplastics and chemicals that flow into the storm drains to pollute our waterways and wildlife.
Separate studies have shown that newer e-cigarettes may deliver higher doses of nicotine more efficiently, which could explain the recent findings. The investigators acknowledged that more frequent use of e-cigarettes may also reflect greater determination to quit smoking combustible cigarettes. They noted that their study did not evaluate the risks of youth e-cigarette use. E-cigarettes are the most commonly used commercial tobacco product among youth,1 so it is critical that public health officials and the general public understand the potential risks of using them.
The authors gratefully acknowledge the support from late Dr Ari Haukkala from the University of Helsinki for the dissertation of which this article is part of. The first author was supported for doctoral research including this work by a grant from the Juho Vainio Foundation. Given that there is no safe tobacco product, youth and adults who do not use tobacco products should not start using e-cigarettes. Vaping and smoking both involve inhaling nicotine and other substances into your lungs. E-cigarettes heat liquid to make an aerosol; cigarettes burn tobacco, which creates smoke.
The success of all these enterprises hinges on the claim that e-cigarettes are healthier than traditional cigarettes. Companies like to paint a black-and-white picture of a new era of safe smoking. "Cigarettes, you've met your match," NJOY proudly proclaims in its Super Bowl ads. E-cigarettes and vaping are part of a trend going back at least nine years in the U.S. First publicized as a safer alternative to smoking tobacco, vaping caught on because it didn’t contain the carcinogens or tars found in most smoking tobacco products. Also, vaping was supposed to eliminate the dangers of secondhand smoke to those nearby.
In a major recent undertaking to help clarify the effects of e-cigarettes, the physician-investigator conducted a review of the best available evidence about vaping and lung harms. She and her co-authors published their roundup of the evidence in an article titled "Vaping and Lung Inflammation and Injury," which appeared online Feb. 10 in the journal Annual Review of Physiology. A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2015 found a connection too. Researchers surveyed 2,500 Los Angeles high school students who had never smoked.
E-cigarettes are not risk-free but are believed to cause less harm than smoking. They do not burn tobacco or produce tar or carbon monoxide — two of the most harmful parts of tobacco smoke. Smoking can raise your risk for periodontal disease or disease affecting the gums.
Among adolescents who both vaped and smoked traditional cigarettes, a higher proportion in the This is Quitting program, about 51%, reported not vaping nor smoking at seven months, compared with 30% of the assessment-only group. Withdrawal from tobacco products can cause temporary congestion and respiratory discomfort as your lungs and airways begin to heal. Increased mucus production right after quitting smoking may be a positive sign that your respiratory system is recovering. What might be considered safe for the average workplace employee could still pose serious health risks for more medically vulnerable populations.
In January, the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners passed a new ordinance that prevents new vape shops from opening within 1,000 feet of a school to address youth nicotine consumption. On the rare occasions I partake, instead of filling my nostrils with the taste of a warm crème brûlée, my mouth tastes like a street gutter for an hour. I like the nicotine, but everything else about the experience is viscerally revolting. About 43% of the study participants were LGBTQ+ adolescents, for instance, and research suggests that LGBTQ+ young people smoke and vape at a higher prevalence than their non-LGBTQ+ peers. The new study included a diverse group of adolescents, indicating how the text message program could be helpful for marginalized communities, said Dr. Suchitra Krishnan-Sarin, a professor of psychiatry at the Yale School of Medicine. "Text messaging is a scalable and cost-efficient approach to delivering vaping cessation treatment on a population basis," the researchers wrote in the study.
E-cigarettes can be used to smoke or "vape" marijuana products, herbs, waxes and oils. In the US, e-cigarettes are the most commonly used tobacco product among middle- and high-school students. In 2023, 2.1 million students (10% of high-school students and 4.6% of middle-school students) reported current e-cigarette use.
A great example of this is the Riot Connex Pod Kit which uses magnets to attach replaceable cartridge-like flaovured pods to the batter. You can also get refillable pod mod kits, which use pods with built-in coils but require filling with your e-liquid. These can also appeal to beginners who like to experiment with different flavours but wish to keep the set-up as minimal as possible.
Current evidence indicates that using e-cigarettes is dangerous, especially for young people and people who have never smoked. In young people, the use of nicotine can impact the reward system in the brain. In time, this can make the use of other drugs, such as cocaine, more pleasurable, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).
This ban excludes disposable e-cigarette devices, which are sold in many appealing flavors and are relatively inexpensive. And are now the most popular type of e-cigarette used by adolescents. Nicotine is highly addictive and may lead to nicotine cravings and development of tolerance (the need to use more often in order to have the same effect). Nicotine addiction can negatively affect relationships and impair performance at school, at work, or in other activities. Researchers have also identified vitamin E acetate, a chemical added to some THC-containing vaping products, as the main—but possibly not the only—cause of the illness.
In general, e-cigarettes are not safe for young people or people who are pregnant. Vaping is no safer for developing fetuses than smoking traditional cigarettes. They may also resemble sleek electronic devices, making them appealing to younger users.

The heating element aerosolizes the liquid for the inhalation of the liquid nicotine or other substance. E-cigarettes are electronic cigarettes allowed on frontier airlines called many different names, including "vapes," "e-cigs," "vapor products," and "electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS)." The chemicals in electronic cigarettes, commonly called vapes, can severely damage the lungs, according to studies reviewed by the American Lung Association. The nicotine in them, which can be in higher quantities than traditional cigarettes, can also impact a child’s brain development. Several peer-reviewed studies found that nicotine negatively affects teens’ memory and attention and can increase their risk of developing other mental and behavioral problems later in life.

There are several resources available to assist with learning more about e-cigarettes and educating youth about the risks. Resources are available for parents, educators, and health care providers. According to the 2017 Behavior Risk Factor Survey (BRFS) conducted by DHSS, 4.8 percent of Delaware adults currently use e-cigarettes, roughly the same percentage reported in the 2016 survey.
These findings can reflect general openness to nicotine use, indicated by a previous study showing considerable overlap between susceptibility types [24]. Several school-level factors have a role in both youth tobacco use and educational pathways. These include school rules and policies, physical environment, curriculum, discipline, school health services, school social and learning environment, student commitment to learning and school community as well as parents and the broader community [26]. Further, school influence partly occurs through the perceptions of smoking behaviour in the social network (descriptive norms) and perceptions of social network beliefs (injunctive norms), which both predict smoking initiation among youth [27].

E-cigarettes have been sold in the U.S. since 2007 but in recent years their potential benefits for smokers have been overshadowed by their use by adolescents and teens. Vaping nicotine has not been thoroughly evaluated in scientific studies. For now, not enough data exists on the safety of e-cigarettes, how the health effects compare to traditional cigarettes, and if they are helpful for people trying to quit smoking.
Kids being stuck at home under their parents’ supervision during the COVID-19 pandemic could contribute to that trend. Although there is no federal excise tax on e-cigarettes, states have the authority to tax e-cigarettes. (CNN) — For teens who want to stop vaping nicotine, an interactive text message program was found to be effective at helping them quit.
To be clear, I never even used to smoke during the day when I was using cigarettes. But if a project is particularly stressful (or just slightly vexatious, any excuse will do), my sleek little e-cig is just sitting in my bag at my feet. Like a never-ending pipe, you don’t know when you’ve had enough, when you’ve had a cigarette’s worth of nicotine. One quick puff to slay your stress can turn into one puff every few minutes, then whenever I get the slightest urge.
Vaping may also have specific adverse effects on certain groups, particularly young people. The full magnitude of effects of toxic e-cigarette ingredients may not be known for another three decades. Yale’s Tobacco Center of Regulatory Science received funding support for the study from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, which is part of the National Institutes of Health (U54DA036151), and the Center for Tobacco Products of the FDA. Nicotine-free e-juice contains a number of potentially toxic chemicals, such as base liquids and flavoring agents. However, based on the experience with cigarettes, similar adverse health effects, including COPD, heart disease, and cancer, can be expected. Finally, a 2017 review of the cardiovascular effects of vaping indicates that e-cigarettes may pose certain risks to the heart and circulatory system, notably for people who already have some form of heart disease.
E-cigarettes contain many of the same cancer-causing chemicals that regular cigarettes do. Nicotine is highly addictive, and most e-cigarettes include it as a main ingredient. The AMA promotes the art and science of medicine and the betterment of public health. The rise of e-cigarettes and vaping has raised concerns that another generation may become dependent on nicotine. The AMA has been a leading force to eliminate public smoking and warn people about the dangers of smoking, including secondhand smoke, since the 1960s.
Friday’s action is part of a sweeping FDA review intended to bring scientific scrutiny to the multibillion-dollar vaping market after years of regulatory delays. Currently the U.S. market includes thousands of fruit- and candy-flavored vapes that are technically illegal but are widely available in convenience stores, gas stations and vape shops. Most teens who vape use disposable e-cigarettes, including brands like Elf Bar, which come in flavors such as watermelon and blueberry ice.
In addition, the VITA only heats its vape liquid to about 240 degrees Fahrenheit. That's much lower than many other kinds of vapes, so it won't be as rough on your lungs. LUVV also says their products are tested to "safeguard against" harmful byproducts of heating metal and vape fluid. They don't provide much detail to support this claim, though, so take it with a grain of salt. Like HELO, LUVV vapes are free of diacetyl, vitamin E acetate, and nicotine.
"More research about the health effects of alternative tobacco products is critically needed to put science behind the regulation of the tobacco industry." As the debate blazes, deep-pocketed big tobacco investors are buying up e-cig companies, injecting millions of dollars into the market and banking on a bright future for the devices. More than 100 e-cigarette companies are now jockeying for the business of smokers and nonsmokers alike.
Steer clear of unregulated mods unless you have lots of experience vaping and a decent knowledge of electronics. Like disposable vapes, these devices don't allow modification to the battery and heating element. The difference is that they're rechargeable and refillable, letting you swap in a fresh pod or cartridge of vape juice when the old one runs out.
In this particular aspect, again the composition of the e-liquid varies significantly among different commercial brands [4, 35]. The most common and major components of e-liquids are PG or 1,2-propanediol, and glycerol or glycerine (propane-1,2,3-triol). Both types of compounds are used as humectants to prevent the e-liquid from drying out [2, 53] and are classified by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as "Generally Recognised as Safe" [54].
FDA approved tobacco treatment medications can help people trying to quit smoking. These include over-the-counter and prescription options, which are known to be effective. These medications can make you nearly two times as likely to successfully quit smoking. E-cigarettes are the most commonly used tobacco product among middle- and high-school students. Since e-cigarettes are still new, detailed knowledge about the short-term health effects is limited, and the long-term health effects of e-cigarettes are unknown. Deepa Camenga, MD, a pediatrician who is board-certified in addiction medicine, says it’s never too early to begin talking about e-cigarettes in age-appropriate language.
A note from Cleveland ClinicNicotine poisoning is on the rise, mostly due to the availability of some of the newer forms of nicotine that are now popular. Children eat cigarettes and can be accidentally poisoned by touching, tasting or swallowing liquid nicotine or liquid nicotine-containing products used in e-cigarettes. To keep you and your family and pets safe from nicotine poisoning, the most effective approach would be to eliminate or ban tobacco-containing or nicotine-containing products in your home. If you're interested in quitting smoking, your healthcare team is here, ready and looking forward to helping you. All tobacco products contain nicotine and are harmful to your health. All are technically capable of causing poisoning if taken in large enough quantities.
Vaping can cause breathing problems, organ damage, addiction and other conditions. Lots of people want to know about the health effects of e-cigarettes. They’re still a relatively new product, so it’s too soon to know for sure. This is because e-cigarettes don’t contain cancer-causing tobacco, and most of the toxic chemicals found in cigarettes are not in e-cigarettes. High rates of vaping are "especially concerning given the rate of youth and young adults using these products," she said in a university news release.
And Puerto Rico have passed comprehensive smoke-free indoor air laws that include e-cigarettes, as of March 31, 2023. Almost 9 in 10 people (86%) supported prohibiting the sale of e‑cigarettes to people under 18 years of age, a substantial increase from 2019 (79%). Social and economic factors shape people’s behaviours of vaping or smoking. Generally, people living in the most disadvantaged socioeconomic areas were the most likely to currently smoke regular cigarettes but not use e‑cigarettes (13.2%). In contrast, people living in the most advantaged socioeconomic areas were the most likely to use e‑cigarettes but not smoke regular cigarettes (6.6%) (Figure 4). Young people aged 18 to 24 were the most likely to have used e‑cigarettes in 2022–2023, with almost 1 in 2 (49%) having used them at least once in their lifetime, and over 1 in 5 (21%) currently using e‑cigarettes in 2022–2023. More information on young people’s use of vapes and e-cigarettes can be found online.
We would argue that further studies with chronic administration of low doses of nicotine are required to clearly evaluate its impact on carcinogenicity. In this line, a study compared the acute impact of CS vs. e-cigarette vaping with equivalent nicotine content in healthy smokers and non-smokers. Both increased markers of oxidative stress and decreased NO bioavailability, flow-mediated dilation, and vitamin E levels showing no significant differences between tobacco and e-cigarette exposure (reviewed in [20]). Inasmuch, short-term e-cigarette use in healthy smokers resulted in marked impairment of endothelial function and an increase in arterial stiffness (reviewed in [20]). Similar effects on endothelial dysfunction and arterial stiffness were found in animals when they were exposed to e-cigarette vapor either for several days or chronically (reviewed in [20]).

These and other harmful substances present in e-cigarette vapor can negatively affect the respiratory health of users. The monitoring of other tobacco product sales in conjunction with the monitoring of e-cigarette sales is necessary to provide a comprehensive picture of the overall U.S. tobacco product market.
