The novel explores the deep racial prejudice that existed in Natchez during Jim Crow times, and underscores the factors that allowed violent segregationist thugs to flourish: poverty, fundamentalism, and the brutalities of wars in Europe and Korea.

Maura Isles, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts' chief medical examiner and Jane's best friend is described as awkward and strange when she was a kid. She was adopted privately by a wealthy couple and was nicknamed "Maura the Bore-A" by her classmates. She grew up with little attention from her parents and was deeply affected by the loss of her brother.

Dr John is an internationally renowned medical professional with over 23 years' experience. He specializes in General Adult and Liaison Psychiatry. His first recordings were made on the small New Orleans label Horizon. A collaboration with songwriter Doc Pomus led to the albums City Lights and Tango Palace. After signing with the highly regarded Warner Bros, Dr John continued to record a variety styles while retaining his distinctive sound and evoking New Orleans culture in his music. He released solo piano albums like Dr John Plays Mac Rebennack and The Brightest Smile in Town, and collaborated on a number of albums with artists like Harry Connick Jr.

After the destruction of New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina Dr. John was inspired to record Sippiana Hericane, a fundraising album whose proceeds went to the clinic for musicians in the city. He also contributed to the Grammy Award-winning album City That Care Forgot as an ode to the city he so deeply loves. Additionally, he performed on the 2011 album Desitively Bonnaroo by Allen Toussaint and Gregg Allman.

Dr John is also a respected educator and writer. He has authored several books and has produced an extensive range of video and audio blues and New Orleans piano lessons for Homespun Tapes. He has also written and performed the score for the film version of John Steinbeck's Cannery Row. He has performed with the Rolling Stones and the Band as well as other musicians.

His most recent release, Ske-Dat-De-Dat, is an tribute to Fats Domino and his music. Dr John's songs are infused by the romantic, melancholy and sensuous feel of the Crescent City. The song "Still here" is a tribute for the victims of the recent shootings in Louisiana.

Dr Kontos

Dr Kontos was born in Tarpon Springs, Florida, and was a young interest in dentistry. His first experience of tooth pain and a root canal at the age of 12 allowed him to realize that dental work was the path that he wanted to follow for his life. He was a student and worked hard for a long time before earning his doctorate from Nova Southeastern University. In addition, he has been working in the field with other doctors and presented research results at a variety of venues.

He has a wide range of mental health and medical interests with a focus on older adults. He is registered in the UK with the General Medical Council and is listed on the Specialist Register of General Adult Psychiatry. He also holds an endorsement in Old Age I Am Psychiatry. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and is a member of several professional associations.

In addition to his private practice, Dr Kontos has been on the American Heart Association's ACTION Acute MI Registry and Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care. He has also published more than 150 abstracts, papers and monographs. He is an experienced and caring clinician and has extensive experience in the evaluation and management of patients with acute cardiovascular disease, such as coronary artery disease and myocardial infarction.
